Fondly referred to by locals as “The Pink Palace,” the Fairmont Hamilton Princess opened its doors on January 1, 1885, and from that moment on it was considered the gem of the island of Bermuda. As word got out, celebrities started to appear. Mark Twain, a regular at the hotel, loved to smoke cigars on the verandah while he signed autographs and recited poetry to adoring fans.
To celebrate the hotel's 125th anniversary, we were asked to design a special logo. It had to have the feel of a 19th century crest and reflect the hotel's longstanding reputation for island elegance. One of the most popular features of The Princess was its 400-foot verandah, the perfect location from which to view yacht races in the harbor.
