About this project
Vela is a restaurant in Boston’s Seaport District built around the pleasure of discovery. With globally influenced cuisine and an expansive bar program, the brand needed to feel worldly without anchoring itself to a single geography or cultural reference.
The name Vela, derived from the Latin word for sails, references both maritime navigation and the Vela constellation, part of the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. The concept became a metaphor for exploration. Just as sailors navigate by the stars, guests move through flavors, courses, and atmosphere over the course of an evening.
This framework gave the identity structure. Constellation patterns function as a navigational grid across menus, walls, and printed materials. Lines connect points the way courses connect experiences, introducing movement and direction throughout the system. Subtle sail references in form and silhouette ground the mythology within the Seaport setting.
Typography and color balance refinement with openness. Deep night-sky tones support the constellation motif, while lighter accents create contrast and dimension. Across signage, collateral, and environmental graphics, the system maintains coherence while allowing variation and discovery.
Messaging reinforces the journey. The tagline Eat. Drink. Explore. translates the conceptual foundation into direct language, inviting guests into an experience defined by curiosity, atmosphere, and movement rather than theme.
